Latest Software Testing Trends For 2020 and Beyond

As per a recent report by Statista, you can find more than 2.57 million apps for Android and over 1.84 million apps for iOS devices. And as the app development landscape continues to evolve, it directly indicates that the growth of software testing services goes hand in hand with app development.

With the ongoing improvements and widening scope in the software testing industry, more and more businesses have started investing in this segment in order to attain flawless outputs and improve their user experience.

Ongoing Evolution in the Software Testing Industry

With the rapid adoption of recent technologies and businesses investing in the software development sector, software testing is taking a new spin. The latest tech approaches, including DevOps, Agile, and IoT are encouraging the web development segment to collaborate with the testing industry so as to bring accuracy and effectiveness in the outputs delivered. And as the technology updates and customer demands grow, every day a new term is introduced in the software testing services so as to meet the customer requirements and go beyond their expectation level. Every year we get to hear a lot of new trends, some of them gain wide appreciation while some are a flop.

Well, as we have already entered 2020, it’s high time that we acknowledge the latest software testing trends that are expected to remain in the market this year and in the coming time as well.

Let’s get started!

Top Software Testing Trends for 2020

Here we have list down the popular software testing trends that are expected to overrule the industry at the global level. You might have already heard of a few trends and some might be new to you, well we are here to discuss the advancements in the existing ones and study the new ones. So, here you go!

1. Big Data

Big data refers to the bulk amount of data generated at a high speed. While testing big data, you need to ensure that the terabytes of information are processing properly or not. The prime objective behind this testing is to analyze the performance and functionality of applications. However, the major problem during this phase is- more the volume of data, more will be the time taken to run the test, and the demand for resources also multiply. Well, this year, various new platforms will be introduced for and addressing the issues and result in efficiency in processing, reduced app installation time, and rapid import of data while processing the old one alongside.

2. Machine Learning

Machine learning is not at all a new term that needs an introduction. Well, in 2020, machine learning is going to come up with new concepts while helping in various aspects such as- optimize the test suite and search for unique code checks, predicting the main test configurations depending on the previous checks, improving the log analytics and identifying the checks to be carried out automatically, and even identify the defects and high-risk application points. So, ML and AI are going to help software testing enter the new stage and experience next-gen evolution.

3. DevOps Development

In recent times, testing is no more a process that is carried out at the end of a product lifecycle; rather it is now carried out at the beginning of the development process and is continued till the final launch of a product. At this point, writing and testing processes are going to get closer so as to ensure continuous iteration. It will make sure that any changes carried out in the development process will not hamper the final product at any cost. So, testing a product thoroughly and regularly is the only secret to end up with an ideal product that the customers will simply love.

4. Test Automation

Every individual software trend solely depends on automated processes. And in terms of software testing, there seems a trend of transition to automatic verification of various processes and code. Every enterprise not only wishes to attract the audience but also offer maximum benefits from the product. To attain this, we need to integrate quality and development. Well, here test automation solutions will help you attain high-quality outputs with the help of automation.

5. IoT Testing

It is depicted that by 2025, the number of installed IoT end-user solutions will cross 1.6 trillion by 2025 which was 212 billion US dollars back in 2019, report by Statista. It clearly indicates the rapid adoption of connected devices and the Internet of Things in the coming time. People are going beyond smart cars, smart homes, smart refrigerators, and smart homes. As more and more devices will be connected online, there will be security concerns as well. At this stage, software testing will help to overcome it in various ways such as testing the compatibility of device protocols and versions, monitoring connection delays, safety assessment, data integrity evaluation, and scalability testing as well.

6. Test Mechanization

Test mechanization will ensure that the tests are more precise than before and are completed adequately. For attaining this, various instruments will be used during product testing. Carrying out the tests will enable the analyzers to contrast the genuine outputs with the normal outputs using the tools customized for each module. Relapse tests that usually needed iterative activities will be now mechanized.

7. Cyber Security Testing

With the digital evolution on the hype, the chances of data threats and other malicious activities will automatically multiply. And business owners can’t afford to compromise on their business data and not the customer data either. At this point, they have started realizing the significance of security testing of their products, apps, and services before they bring it in the market.

8. Blockchain Testing

We all have noticed a sudden emerge in the blockchain adoption and the Bitcoin payments these days. Blockchain technology is improving the financial transactions in a far better manner than before. The technology isn’t confined to financing and banking sector only, rather all other business segments are making use out of this technology. But the sad part is that blockchain brings along a few security challenges as well.  To address these security concerns, next-gen blockchain testing services will be carried out that are specifically designed for debugging the code and offer more productive Blockchain apps.

9. Performance Engineering

Till now, testing was only confined up to verifying a product’s performance. But from now on, the meaning of testing will transform while widening its reach to other components as well- convenience, practical use, customer value, and configuration quality. The whole credit goes to the integration of testing as a stage- parallel development, where you can easily divide a test into various parts. By this, the quality assessment will become more accurate and we will be now able to implement test automation successfully.

10. RPA Testing

RPA - Robotic Process Automation can be referred to as the extended version of Automation because RPA can be applied to everything that is in a structured form, unlike automation that requires a software product to work upon. Businesses can use RPA with complex processes that can be automated with AI. Under RPA, a computer mimics human action and assists in the process of completing rule-based tasks. The robot led automation is going to overrule the automation testing in the coming time and has the potential to transform the workplace operations and even carry out tasks that are usually performed by automation testing tools.

11. Switching from Open-source to Open Innovation

Open source software testing tools and frameworks have gained rapid popularity in recent time especially due to their unique features like availability of open testing and development platforms. This particular trend is expected to gain popularity in the coming years where development and testing will be getting more experimental and will require continous improvement. The majority of the SMBs and other businesses will soon start investing in open source innovation for enhanced delivery and robust products in the tech-driven landscape.

So, these are the most popular trends that a software testing company must be aware of in order to excel in the market and stay up-to-date with the latest updates. It will definitely help you end up with flawless outputs that will really surprise your end customers.
